– In an ongoing effort to help residents combat identity theft, Rep. Ryan Mackenzie (Lehigh/Berks), along with Sen. Pat Browne (R-16), and Lower Macungie Township, are co-hosting a paper shredding event on Saturday, Oct. 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The free service will be available in the parking lot of Mackenzie’s district office located at the Lower Macungie Township Complex, 3402 Brookside Road
“Identity theft is a fast-growing crime, and we are pleased to once again be able to provide residents a safe and secure way to destroy documents containing their personal and financial data,” said Mackenzie. “These events always attract a lot of people who realize the importance of shredding paperwork that contains birth dates, Social Security numbers, bank account information, and other sensitive or identifying information.”
“Each year, thousands of Pennsylvanians become the unfortunate victims of identity theft,” Browne said. “Shredding events, like the one I am hosting with Rep. Mackenzie and Lower Macungie Township, are a great way for residents to reduce their risk of identity theft by conveniently disposing of old personal and financial documents in an environmentally friendly manner.”
Residents can shred up to four boxes (the approximate size of carry-on luggage) of sensitive documents per vehicle. They are asked to remain in their vehicles while staff unload the documents to be shredded.
Paperwork that cannot be shredded includes old phone books, magazines, birthday cards, folders, newspapers, junk mail, etc., as these items can be recycled at the curb. There is no need to remove staples or paper clips, but documents should be removed from binders and notebooks.
Due to overwhelming popularity of these events, residents are reminded that items for shredding will not be accepted before the start time, and each vehicle will be limited to four boxes/bags.
This event is for residents only. No businesses, please.
