Mackenzie to Hold Shredder Event
HARRISBURG – Rep. Ryan Mackenzie (R-Berks/Lehigh) will hold a Fall Shredder Event this Saturday, Oct. 10, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lower Macungie Township Building, 3402 Brookside Road, Macungie.

This free event is co-sponsored by Lower Macungie Township. Everyone in the 134th District is invited to participate, regardless of municipality. The 134th includes the Berks County communities of Hereford, Longswamp, Richmond and Rockland townships, along with Topton Borough. Lehigh County locations include Lower Macungie, Salisbury and South Whitehall townships, as well as the Boroughs of Alburtis and Macungie.

“Shredding documents containing sensitive personal information, like account and Social Security numbers, is one of the most effective ways to guard one’s privacy and prevent identity theft,” said Mackenzie. “This event is always popular with constituents, and we anticipate a large turnout.”

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, 18 million Americans were victims of identity theft in 2014. Identity thieves notably stepped up their efforts to target seniors. Incidents of identity theft among persons age 65 and older increased 20 percent between 2013 and 2014. All age groups, however, are impacted.

“It’s important to remember also to shred documents listing a child’s personal information,” said Mackenzie. “Many young people approaching adulthood and attempting to establish credit on their own have discovered their identities were stolen years earlier, long after the perpetrators had disappeared and were unable to be brought to justice.”

Due to the number of constituents expected to participate, attendees are requested to limit the amount of discarded paperwork to four boxes or bags per household.
