HARRISBURG – Rep. Ryan Mackenzie (R-Berks/Lehigh) will be co-hosting a public paper shredder event on Saturday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lower Macungie Township Administration Building, located at 3402 Brookside Road, Macungie. The event will be co-hosted by Sen. Pat Browne (R-Lehigh) and Lower Macungie Township.
Residents are invited to bring up to four boxes (10”x12.5”x16”) or equivalent (approximately the size of one standard item of carry-on luggage) of items to shred per vehicle. Because this event is meant for documents containing sensitive, identifying information, it is requested that attendees not bring items which do not fit this description as these can be thrown out or recycled at home.
“Identity theft can decimate the financial standing of the victims, oftentimes with very low probabilities of catching the perpetrator,” said Mackenzie. “One of the best ways to safeguard oneself from identity theft is by shredding sensitive, identifying documents before disposal. I’m happy to provide an opportunity for people to strengthen their defenses against identity thieves.”
Lately, identity thieves have taken a new approach: stealing the identity information of minors. After stealing the information, identity thieves can open accounts in the child’s name and vanish without a trace, leaving the child in debt before he or she reaches adulthood.
This event is for residents only – businesses are kindly asked to dispose of their sensitive documents on their own. Due to the popularity of these events, no boxes will be accepted prior to the start time.
For more information on the event, call Mackenzie’s office at 610-965-9933.
