Mackenzie Announces School Safety Grants for Area Districts
2/26/2020
HARRISBURG – Rep. Ryan Mackenzie (R-Lehigh/Berks) today announced $240,000 in School Safety and Security Grants for school districts in the 134th Legislative District.

“School safety is paramount to a student’s ability to focus and learn,” said Mackenzie. “Because each school district in the Commonwealth is so diverse, these grants are designed to give districts the flexibility to use the funding for security measures that will best serve their particular schools.”

Funding can be used for a variety of purposes, including hiring school security officers, purchasing security-related technology, completing safety and security assessments, implementing violence prevention curricula, offering counseling services for students, and creating other programs to protect students.

School districts in the 134th Legislative District to receive grants are as follows:

• Brandywine Heights Area School District - $35,000.
• East Penn School District - $45,000.
• Fleetwood Area School District - $40,000.
• Parkland School District - $45,000.
• Salisbury Township School District - $35,000.
• Upper Perkiomen School District - $40,000.

A total of $53.7 million in grants were awarded by the School Safety and Security Committee within the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency as part of the School Safety and Security Grant Program, which was created by lawmakers in 2018.

Funding included $18.7 million for meritorious grants. Meritorious grants range from $30,000-$45,000 based upon average daily student attendance of the school district.

The grant program funding also included $33.8 million in competitive grants that were made available for certain eligible school entities.

In total, 496 school districts received the meritorious grant and 134 applicants received the competitive grant.
